The Centre for Teaching and Learning of the University of West Attica successfully organized its 4th online seminar titled “Team Based Learning”. The event took place on Monday, March 27, 2023, from 17:00 to 20:00 via MS Teams platform.
The conference was introduced by the steering committee of Centre of Teaching & Learning of the University of West Attica, Yannis Psaromiligkos, Sophia Asonitou, and Maria Chatzigianni. The presentation of the keynote speaker, Dr. Panos Vlachopoulos, was divided into three (3) parts and at the end of each part was followed by an open discussion. In the first part, Dr. P. Vlachopoulos proceeded to an introduction to the methodology, the basic characteristics and challenges of Team Based Learning (TBL), but also to a detailed presentation of the phases it follows (1. Individual preparation, 2. Individual Readiness Test – IRAT, 3. Team Readiness Test – TRAT, 4. Objections, 5. Clarifications, 6. Practice) In the second part, he gave concrete examples of the TBL structure, presenting his own course at Macquarie University and an application scenario by fifth grade teachers in the context of the Environmental Studies course. In the third part, he conducted a workshop in which participants were invited to answer a TBL IRAT Online quiz via the Socrative tool.
The issues that were addressed at the end of each part were as follows:
- Exploring optimal strategies for dividing groups and implementing this method with a large audience, considering the instructor-trainee ratio.
- Emphasizing the significance of trainees’ active engagement, maturity, and thorough preparation for the course.
- Skillfully managing complex and unfamiliar subjects to facilitate effective learning among students.
- Investigating the various approaches employed by foreign universities to ensure the delivery of exceptional teaching quality.
- Conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the implementation of the Team-Based Learning (TBL) program at Macquarie University.
- Identifying reliable sources for TBL materials to enhance the learning experience.
- Analyzing the key factors that contribute to the professional development of university teachers in international settings.
